About the Author
Rachel Laurn writes from lived experience beside the wild black bears of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 2004, when her family moved north, she never imagined a bear wandering into her backyard would change her life forever.
Yet despite removing bird feeders, garbage, and other attractants, the bears kept returning. Curiosity gradually replaced fear. Rachel began studying black bears — their behavior, communication, family structures, and ability to adapt.
Known throughout her community as The Bear Lady, she shares intimate stories of Molly, Jeremy, Joey, Matty, and generations of wild visitors — a powerful reminder that knowledge can replace fear, and respect can grow through understanding.
